Under the Skin is a new full-length collaborative work for twelve dancers from Wen Wei Dance and the Beijing Modern Dance Company. A dual investigation into the common ground shared by performers from Canada and China, Under the Skin is a challenging work that examines ideas of cultural and personal identity, from the inside out.
Under the Skin features choreographic works by Wen Wei Wang (“In Transition”) and Gao Yanjinzi (“Journey to the East”).
In Transition is about the collision of the past and the present within the continuum of personal and social evolution. Journey to the East explores the collectivity of different groups and the forces that divide and unite people.
Under the Skin is a co-production of the Canada Dance Festival, Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre Society, Arts Partner in Creative Development and the Banff Centre.
“Wang is a proven maverick of wild imagination. Gao is an iconoclast whose artistic goal is liberation of expression. Together they forge new ground in the dance arts.” - The Globe and Mail
